William Yang is one of the most well-known photographers and performance artists of Australia. After architecture and experimental theatre groups he dealt with photography, became a dramatist, performer and founder member of the Performance Syndicate. Handwritten stories are enclosed in his documentary pictures and exhibitions, and his autobiographical solo performances comment on picture cycles, which were filmed and honoured many times in turn. It is the look of the outsider at surprising details and a well told story which fascinates others. The topics revolve humorously around fringe groups, Chinese ancestors, friends with AIDS and being a stranger in the country of one’s own. Yang reports in “China” how he roved through the Middle Kingdom between 1989 and 2005, the homeland of his grandparents. Yang is a gifted storyteller. With his intimate travel story he develops for himself and us, accompanied by Chinese Erhu music, the native country of his ancestors.
