Alvis Hermanis, Theater der Nationen

Latvia, Russia
For the Latvian director Alvis Hermanis, aside from his parents, Mikhail Gorbachev is one of the people who had the greatest influence on his life. He says: »A few years ago, I still believed the Soviet Union had collapsed for economic reasons. Now I am convinced that it only ceased to exist due to the so-called ›human factor‹. And that factor is called Mikhail Gorbachev – not to forget his wife Raisa. It is thanks to them that I am free person who comes from a free country, Latvia, where people are able to enjoy freedom of speech and all the other freedoms too.« Hermanis’s play centres on the love between two people who discovered each other, influenced each other, allowed themselves to be guided by each other and who then stood at the centre of historical and political events on a global scale.
