The backdrop is an imposing cinema screen showing movie images of a Chinese cityscape that seems futuristic and ambitious. Meanwhile, the unsuccessful writer and alcoholic Mo Fei sits on a park bench letting his life go by. But Mo Fei also has a gift: he can look into the future. He sees abandoned cities, the last surviving human beings and learns that after he dies, his body will lie undiscovered for seven days.
Krystian Lupa’s dramatisation of Chinese writer Shi Tiesheng’s novella celebrates the power of the imagination – a quality viewed as useless in China’s results-orientated society. However, Mo Fei is a detailed and poetic portrait that helps bringing us closer to Chinese society. Its strong ensemble of Chinese actors is led by the celebrated film actor Wang Xuebing in the title role.
