The Planet - A Lament

Indonesia
Opera
The distinguished Indonesian playwright and theatre and film director Garin Nugroho’s production The Planet – A Lament is built around a 14-part choir singing an evocative song cycle. The composition, rooted in elements of traditional Melanesian music, is based on research by the Papuan composer and soloist Septina Rosalina Layan and its choreography draws on a traditional Easter procession from the island of East Timor. It will be presented in Düsseldorf outdoors in the Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz. Garin Nugroho uses Layan’s composition, film elements and dynamic dance sequences to tell the story of the world being created anew in the Indonesian archipelago following a devastating environmental disaster. He says: »We will present these environmental issues in the form of a lament: in memory of the victims of past disasters, but also as an expression of cautious optimism and collective feeling.«
